Germany Introduces New Regulations Allowing International Students with Student Visas to Work 9 Months Prior to Their Studies

According to Naijarelocate, Germany has recently implemented the second phase of its revised skilled worker law, following its initial enactment in November 2023. The government’s objective is to attract skilled workers from diverse sectors, and it is achieving this goal by relaxing regulations through its international student visa route. Noteworthy changes include the provision of work opportunities prior to commencing studies.

Non-EU citizens

Non-EU citizens applying for study visas can now stay for up to nine months to prepare their university applications. During this period, applicants are permitted to undertake language courses, gather required documentation, and adapt to the country’s environment. Particularly significant is the allowance for prospective students from developing nations to work up to 20 hours per week during this preparatory period to sustain themselves financially. These regulatory amendments not only benefit international students but also facilitate the seamless integration of work and study at all levels of higher education in Germany, even before formal admission.

Apprenticeships in Germany

For non-EU nationals interested in apprenticeships in Germany, the recent regulatory changes offer a promising opportunity. Similar to university applicants, they can now work while seeking apprenticeship opportunities, with the flexibility to stay for nine months. To qualify, individuals must demonstrate a B1-level proficiency in German and be under 35 years of age. During this period, they are permitted to engage in part-time work and continue working for 20 hours per week alongside their apprenticeship training once secured.

international students in Germany can now work more hours

Additionally, international students in Germany can now work more hours to support themselves financially under the updated regulations. The permitted time has been extended from 120 to 140 full days in any calendar year, equating to 20 hours per week, or 280 half days per calendar year. Moreover, graduates of German universities now have the privilege of an 18-month stay post-graduation for job hunting, with the option to apply for permanent residence after two years of employment.

Graduates seeking a career change

Furthermore, graduates seeking a career change have an alternative visa pathway through the EU Blue Card or German Skilled Worker Visa, provided they hold a recognized degree or vocational qualification and possess two years of relevant work experience, even if not in the same field or industry as their qualification.
