Assistant Psychologist Job Summary
The assistant psychologist will work within the South Manchester (Wythenshawe Hospital/community) cardiac rehabilitation programme as part of a multidisciplinary team of professionals (including working alongside a principal practitioner psychologist).
The assistant psychologist will play a key part of this role will be contributing to the delivery of evidence-based psychological approaches within the cardiac rehabilitation programme including assisting with psychological assessment and interventions under the supervision of a qualified psychologist and assisting with relevant projects within the service. Supervision and CPD time will be provided.
The Assistant Psychologist Main duties
- Contributing (under supervision) to the psychological assessment and intervention (individual/group) of patients receiving input from cardiac rehabilitation programme.
- Supporting adherence to good practice (e.g. British Association of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation)
- Supporting service development/relevant projects
- Membership of the multidisciplinary team and contributing to holistic approaches to supporting those under the care of the team.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- An upper second class honours degree or higher in psychology.
- Entitlement to graduate basis for chartered membership registration (GBC) with the British Psychological Society
Desirable
- Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice and/or research design and analysis.
Experience
Essential
- Experience of working with people with mental health problems and/or other relevant health disabilities
- Experience of working independently and liaising with other healthcare workers
Desirable
- Experience of working with patients in a hospital and/or cardiac setting and/or within a Psychological Service setting
- Experience of using neuropsychological assessments
Knowledge
Essential
- An understanding of psychology applied to health care.
- Knowledge of abnormal psychology and CBT

- Knowledge of psychological issues and assessment
Skills
Essential
- High level communication skills (written and verbal) including an ability to communicate and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive.
- Ability to communicate sensitive information to patients, carers and colleagues in an appropriate way
- Ability to produce reports under supervision to a high standard
- An understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with mental health problems or other disabilities.
- An ability to apply existing psychological knowledge to a mental health and/or a psychology service context
