Responsibilities of a health care assistant (HCA) in the NHS vary depending on where they are based and the specific needs of the patients they are caring for. Generally, their role is to provide support to healthcare professionals such as nurses and doctors. Here are some common duties of an HCA:

Personal Care:

  • Washing and dressing patients.
  • Assisting with toileting needs.
  • Helping patients to eat and drink.
  • Making beds and keeping patients’ areas tidy.

Mobility Support:

  • Helping patients to move around safely, using equipment like wheelchairs or hoists.
  • Assisting with exercises and rehabilitation activities.

Clinical Tasks:

  • Taking and recording basic observations like temperature, pulse, and blood pressure.
  • Measuring and recording weight and height.
  • Collecting and delivering samples for testing.
  • Assisting with wound care and dressings.
  • Supporting with clinical procedures, such as taking blood samples or ECGs (under supervision).

Emotional Support:

  • Talking and listening to patients, providing companionship and reassurance.
  • Supporting patients and their families during difficult times.
  • Helping patients to maintain their independence and dignity.

Administrative Tasks:

  • Answering telephones and dealing with enquiries.
