The Surgical Decision Unit (SDU) is a dedicated unit for patients who require an emergency surgical review. The unit consists of two services – an ambulatory care service and an emergency admissions area. SDU accepts referrals from the Emergency Department, Somerset Primary Link, Vascular Surgery, Urology, Trauma and Orthopaedics.

The emergency admissions area has 22 beds, and the Triage area (ambulatory service) has a dedicated Triage Room and two assessment rooms. SDU deals with a large number of patient referrals and is one of the busiest departments in the hospital.As a health care Assistant you will work as part of a large multidisciplinary team and will play a key role in delivering the fundamentals of care for patients under the supervision of a nurse, whilst supporting patients to achieve the shared goals. Individuals should be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills who are willing to learn and take on new challenges as the service develops.

  • A Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) Level 3. This could be a Vocational NVQ, BTEC or equivalent international qualification in healthcare or able to demonstrate the equivalent level of experience

Experience

  • Previous recent experience of working within an acute/ community setting.Cannulation and phlebotomyExperience of recording ECGs
