Main duties of the Health care assistant job role

The health care assistant job role with entail supporting the wider clinical team, running your own clinics and being responsible for your time management. The succesful applicant will be required to carry out the following duties:

Phlebotomy/ECGs/Ear Syringing/NHS Health Checks/New Patients registration Health Checks/Smoking/Assisting in minor surgery clinics/Chaperoning/BP checks/vaccination clinics for example flu/pneumonia/shingles/B12

Healthcare Assistant Job Description

Summary

The healthcare assistant will provide an important service for patients, carrying out procedures and providing support to patients to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Duties and Responsibilities

The role requires initiative and good judgement but will always be supported more senior clinicians on duty who can assist you.

Whilst following the appropriate clinical guideline, duties will include:

Phlebotomy

Labelling test samples correctly for transportation to labs

Carry out screening and measurements such as blood pressure, height, weight, BMI, urinalysis, pulse rate and rhythm, ECG taking, blood glucose readings.

Record relevant past medical history when doing patient health checks, and collect lifestyle data such as current smoking status, exercise and alcohol consumption.

Provide health promotion and education (eg use of medical devices) to patients

Chaperone for other clinicians

Refer patients to other clinicians where necessary

Report any changes to a patients medical conditions, behaviour or any concerns to an appropriate clinician

Assist clinical staff where appropriate

Monitor patient during nebulisation therapy

Maintain accurate record keeping in line with practice guidelines and standards

Assist GPs in minor surgery clinics

Carry out any additional screening and measurements including spirometry

Demonstrate a basic understanding of long term conditions and provide education/support to patients to self-manage their conditions.

Provide a service to promote a healthy lifestyle to patients including smoking cessation and weight management.

Administer influenza, pneumococcal, shingles and vitamin B12 injections on the instruction of a regulated profession and respond appropriately in the rare event of an adverse reaction to vaccination.

Admin Responsibilities

Main clinical stock

Restock clinical areas with supplies

Support the delivery of targets including contacting patients to provide information and to invite them to attend clinics where required.

Implement health promotion activities.

Communications Skills

Demonstrate the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively to ensure patients are fully informed and consent to treatment where necessary.

Communicate with other members of the multi-disciplinary team effectively

Recognise any patient needs for alternative methods of communication.

Provide and receive sensitive information

Understand and follow policies such as GDPR and freedom of information act in line with practice policies

Participation in practice meetings and patient participation groups meetings.

Team Working

Understand your role within the organisation

Work as a team member supporting others

Accept delegation from other nurses and prioritise your own workload and ensure effective time management.

Organisation

Follow practice policies such as health and safety, confidentiality and information governance and attend training where appropriate.

Ensure own actions are in line with clinical governance system and where necessary bring any at risk situations to the attention of senior staff,

Support and work towards the achievement of nationals standards (QOF)

Enter data onto practice clinical system EMIS WEB using accurate codes in order to ensure accurate information retrieval for financial and audit processes and monitoring of patients.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • Applicant must have a minimum of 4 years experience in General Practice.

Desirable

  • Desirable that the applicant has knowledge of Emis.
