Support Worker Job Summary
We have a unique new opportunity for an enthusiastic and highly Support Worker to join the new UCLH Proton Beam Therapy Department.
We are looking to recruit Support Worker with outstanding communication skills and a caring, patient-centred approach to work within the department which includes a Macmillan Living Room – a supportive space within the department for patients receiving PBT. The successful candidate will be a core member of the Macmillan Information and Support team providing practical and emotional support to patients living with cancer and their families. They will be able to co-ordinate care pathways and provide education and support for patients with non-complex health needs. They will perform a range of non-clinical procedures as required, to varying degrees of complexity. The successful candidate will assist with the day-to-day organisation of the Macmillan Living Room providing holistic patient care.

We are looking for Support Worker who will enjoy the challenges of working within the cancer environment. Previous experience in health and social care work is essential. IT skills and previous administration and clerical experience are also expected.
Main duties of the job
The postholder will:
- Support the Macmillan Information and Support Radiographer and Radiotherapy/PBT Review Team in providing holistic patient care.
- Provide regular supported conversations with the person living with cancer, assessing their holistic needs, and supporting them to self-manage by providing relevant information and advice, and signposting to other Macmillan resources and services available to meet their identified needs.
- Following a holistic needs assessment, coordinate care with the person living with cancer so they can access the right help at the right time, providing a seamless experience of care. Checks that the person is able to self-manage and provides a flexible and personalised response to any changes in need.
- Navigate the complex health and social care system, both during and following completion of cancer treatment, by building relationships with professionals and facilitating access to these services including generating referrals on the person’s behalf where necessary.
- Provide practical and emotional support to the person living with cancer and their families.
- Recognise information needs may change over time and works with the person to ensure they have all the information and support they need at all stages of the cancer journey.
