Direct Patient Care Responsibilities of  NHS Healthcare Assistant

  • Assisting with personal care: Helping patients with washing, dressing, toileting, eating, and drinking.
  • Moving and handling: Assisting patients with mobility and transfers, using appropriate equipment and techniques.
  • Monitoring vital signs: Taking and recording patients’ temperature, pulse, respiration rate, and blood pressure.
  • Supporting with medication: Assisting patients with taking medication, under the supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Providing emotional support: Talking to patients, listening to their concerns, and offering reassurance and comfort.
  • Observing and reporting: Monitoring patients’ condition and reporting any changes to the nurse or doctor.

Indirect Patient Care Responsibilities of  NHS Healthcare Assistant

  • Maintaining a clean and safe environment: Cleaning patient areas, making beds, and disposing of waste.
  • Serving meals and drinks: Assisting with mealtimes and ensuring patients have adequate hydration.
  • Ordering and restocking supplies: Ensuring that patient areas are stocked with necessary items.
  • Assisting with administrative tasks: Completing paperwork, answering phones, and booking appointments.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Supporting clinical procedures: Assisting with procedures like wound care, catheterization, and ECGs, under the supervision of a registered nurse or doctor.
  • Providing basic life support: Performing CPR and using a defibrillator in emergency situations.
  • Escorting patients: Accompanying patients to appointments or tests.

Specific Settings:

  • Hospital wards: HCAs typically work as part of a team of nurses and doctors, providing care for a group of patients.
  • Clinics and GP surgeries: HCAs may assist with procedures like vaccinations, blood tests, and dressing changes.
  • Care homes: HCAs provide personal care and support to elderly residents or those with disabilities.
  • Community settings: HCAs may visit patients in their own homes to provide care and support.
